Speed. Precision. Big plays. Few players in St. Louis football history embodied those qualities quite like Mel Gray.
Born September 29, 1948, Gray first made headlines as a blazing sprinter at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, California. In 1967, he set a national high school record in the 100-yard dash (9.4 seconds) at the CIF California State Meet — a mark that stood as the meet record for more than a decade.

That speed carried him to the University of Missouri, where he became a two-sport standout in both football and track. Gray was an All-American sprinter and a five-time Big Eight Conference champion, dominating the 60-, 100-, and 220-yard dashes. On the football field, he quickly proved he was more than just fast — he was electric. In 1969, Gray hauled in 25 receptions for 705 yards and nine touchdowns, earning All-Big Eight honors and eventually setting the school record for 1,491 career receiving yards, a mark that stood for two decades.
In the 1971 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Cardinals selected Gray in the sixth round — a pick that turned into one of the franchise’s most explosive weapons of the 1970s.
Over 12 seasons (1971–1982) with St. Louis, Gray built a reputation as one of the NFL’s most dangerous deep threats. His combination of world-class speed and big-play ability helped him earn four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1974–1977.

Career Highlights:• 351 receptions• 6,644 receiving yards• 45 touchdowns• 18.9 yards per catch average
Remarkably, 28 of his 45 touchdown receptions traveled more than 40 yards, a testament to his home-run ability every time he touched the ball. Gray also demonstrated remarkable consistency, catching passes in 121 consecutive games from 1973 to 1982.
Today, Mel Gray’s legacy continues to be celebrated. He has been inducted into the University of Missouri Hall of Fame, the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame, and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, honoring a career that blended world-class speed with game-changing football talent.
From record-setting sprinter to Pro Bowl receiver, Mel Gray remains one of the most electrifying players to ever wear a St. Louis Cardinals uniform.
